    A Goddess Arrives

    Ref: IHO914-8

    Price: £12.99

    Gerald Gardner

Gardner’s first novel came about as the result of a dream, or rather a series of dreams, in which he seemed to be in charge of constructing a defensive wall in order to repel invaders. He suspected that it may have been a memory from a previous lifetime somewhere in the Mediterranean or Middle East. The dreams were so vivid that Gardner was inspired to write 'A Goddess Arrives'. The novel is based on the historical invasion of Cyprus by the Egyptians in 1450 BCE and tells of how they were ultimately repulsed. The heroine of the story, Dayonis, is described as a witch, but she seems to need animal and in some cases human sacrifices in her rituals. The legend of Venus emerging from the waves is dramatically incorporated into the story. A Goddess Arrives is well written and was published at the end of 1939, just after Gardner’s initiation into the Craft, as witchcraft is often known to those involved. It shows that he was interested in witchcraft and ritual previous to that time, although he was forced to change some of his ideas, for example about human and animal sacrifice, when he actually met some witches in person.

    Philip Heselton

    ISBN: 1861631642

Continuing the investigation started in Wiccan Roots — Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival. Philip Heselton looks at the crucial ten years from 1944 to 1954, during which time Gardner’s own practice of witchcraft developed from the more shamanic practices and teachings which he inherited from the New Forest witches to the distinctive shape of modern Wicca. The various influences on Gardner are examined, including: The herbalism and other practices of the New Forest coven; The magical practices of the hereditary family into which he was initiated; The influence of Edith Woodford-Grimes (Dafo) and her background in Co-Masonry and Rosicrucianism; The Folk-Lore Society and the ideas of Margaret Murray; J.S.M. Ward and the Abbey Folk Park; Naturism; The Ancient Druid Order; Aleister Crowley and the O.T.O. Gardner's life in the immediate post-war years, including: his return from Highcliffe to London; his acquisition of the "Witch's Cottage", the activities at Bricket Wood and the establishment of Ancient British Crafts; his meeting with Cecil Williamson and the establishment of the Museum on the Isle of Man; his writing of High Magic’s Aid and Witchcraft Today. The various versions of Gardner’s “Book of Shadows” are examined and, whilst respecting their secret nature, they will be set in an appropriate context.
