This is something of a unique event in esoteric publishing - a new book by the legendary occultist Dion Fortune. Well there are to be several, of which this is the first. Especially with its teachings on the theory and practice of ritual or ceremonial magic, by one who, like the heroine of two of her novels, was undoubtedly "a Mistress of that art".

In a work that has hitherto appeared only in fragmented form in rare journal articles, she deals in successive chapters with Types of Mind Working; Mind Training; the use of Ritual; Psychic Perception; Ritual Initiation; the Reality of the Subtle Planes; Focusing the Magic Mirror; Channelling the Forces; the Form of the Ceremony; and the Purpose of Magic - with appendices on Talisman Magic and Astral Forms.

Each chapter is supplemented and expanded by a companion chapter on the same subject, by Gareth Knight. In Dion Fortune's day the conventions of occult secrecy prevented her from being too explicit on the practical details of magic, except in works of fiction. these veils of secrecy having now been rolled back, Gareth Knight has taken the opportunity to fill in much practical information that Dion Fortune might well have included had she been writing today.

In short, in this unique collaboration of two magical practitioners and teachers we are presented with a valuable and up-to-date text on the practice of ritual or ceremonial magic "as it is". That is to say, as a practical, spiritual, and psychic discipline, far removed from the lurid superstition and speculation that are the hallmark of its treatment in sensational journalism and channels of popular entertainment.

One of the early ambitions of Dion Fortune along with her husband Dr Thomas Penry Evans was to found a clinic devoted to esoteric medicine, along the lines that she had fictionally described in her series of short stories The Secrets of Dr. Taverner. The original Dr. Taverner was her first occult teacher Dr. Theodore Moriarty, about whom she later wrote: 'if there had been no Dr. Taverner there would have been no Dion Fortune!' Shortly after their marriage in 1927 she and Dr. Evans began to receive a series of inner communications from a contact whom they referred to as the Master of Medicine. Owing to the pressure of all their other work in founding an occult school the clinic never came to fruition as first intended, but a mass of material was gathered in the course of their little publicised healing work, which combined esoteric knowledge and practice with professional medical expertise. Most of this material has since been recovered from scattered files and reveals a fascinating approach to esoteric healing, taking into account the whole human being. Health problems are examined in terms of their physical, etheric, astral, mental or spiritual origination, along with principles of esoteric diagnosis based upon the structure of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The function and malfunction of the psychic centres are described along with principles for their treatment by conventional or alternative therapeutic methods, with particular attention paid to the aura and the etheric double. Apart from its application to the healing arts much of the material is of wider interest for it demonstrates techniques for general development of the psychic and intuitive faculties apart from their more specialised use in assisting diagnosis.

Principles of Hermetic Philosophy, together with The Esoteric Philosophy of Astrology, are the last-known works written by Dion Fortune. they appeared in her Monthly Letters to members and associates of the Society of the Inner Light between November 1942 and March 1944.

Her intention in these works is summed up in her own words: "The observations in these pages are an attempt to gather together the fragments of a forgotten wisdom and explain and expand them in the light of personal observation."

She was uniquely equipped to make highly significant personal observations in these matters as one of the leading practical occultists of her time. What is more, in these later works she feels less constrained by traditions of occult secrecy and takes an altogether more practical approach than in her earlier, well known textbooks.

Gareth Knight takes the opportunity to amplify her explanations and practical exercises with a series of full page illustrations, and provides a commentary on her work, together with a further three chapters on recent practical work in the Hermetic Tradition.

This book represents the third collaborative work between the two. An Introduction to Ritual magic and The Circuit of Force being already published in this series.

Deep mysteries veiled under the guise of fiction, this work makes available to the serious student of occultism knowledge of esoteric laws and magical practices in the highly dramatic and entertaining form of a novel.

Hardened to some degree through adversity in the trenches and post War joblessness, besides being disillusioned by conventional religion, Ted Murchison has a vision of the Assyrian Winged Bull in the British Museum while chancing on his one-time Commanding Officer Alick Brangwyn shortly afterwards.

Brangwyn, now an experienced esoteric researcher – testing the practicality of initiating change in accordance with will – offers him a job as general handyman. As a result, Murchison now meets Brangwyn's ethereal sister, Ursula, who has also become involved in the occult arts.

Bragnwyn reveals that his sister has been rescued and is under a form of benevolent house arrest for own good, having become unwisely embroiled in a 'black' Lodge and the schemes of a practitioner of the negative occult, called Astley, who has marked her down as a feminine sacrifice for one of his questionable rituals.

After Astley succeeds in spiriting her away once again, Murchison organises Ursula's rescue from playing a principal role in Astley's version of the Black Mass. From then on Ursula and Ted polarise successfully; realising each possesses elemental qualities that the other lacks in what is likely to become an on-going positive long term relationship.
